If you’ve been listening to Doctor Miracle, our eighth season of Chameleon, you might want to keep learning about Robert Young, the pioneer of the alkaline diet, and the man who many say was a fraud.
One document we wanted to share with you comes from Dolores McCullough, the sick mom who spent time on the alkaline diet ranch trying to be healed.
Several months after her stay, on December 20, 2009, Dolores wrote to the Medical Board of California to complain about Young. It’s a remarkable letter taking Young to task and showcasing her courage.
Dolores writes Young instructed her to stop taking her thyroid medication and increase her intake of salt. She also describes receiving daily colonics, and Young being absent while administering IVs to her:
“He would set up the IV and then proceed to leave me unattended for the duration of the drip, while he (and his staff) would go out for a run…His only admonition to me was to watch for air bubbles and if I saw one I was to shake the tubing and bag to loosen the air bubble. That was it…I had to actually remove the needle from my arm 1x as the drip was completed and he and his staff had not returned from their run.”
Dolores concludes the letter by writing, “His behavior is the stuff of my nightmares.”
