Steve Buscemi & All the Crime That's Fit to Print
Big Time is an anthology of stranger-than-fiction crime stories, and we recommend where to start
This is part of Inside the Tent, a series going behind the scenes of Campside’s award winning podcasts and business.
Fake kidnappings. Elaborate Robberies. Stolen sharks.
The new Campside-produced Apple Original podcast Big Time is the rarest of podcast creatures: an anthology, featuring a new story and dogged reporter every week. And now’s the time to highlight some of those stranger-than-fiction stories.
Big Time has a little something for everyone, all grouped under the guiding rubric of small-timers who had dreams of going big and decided to cross some lines to get there.
Start… at the beginning, with the first episode, The Homecoming Queen’s Gambit (Apple, Spotify): Rajiv Golla reports on a mother who rigs her daughter’s high school popularity contest, and they both face felony charges. Was it worth it?
Then there’s a sports scandal with Sean Flynn hosting alongside his wife Louise Jarvis Flynn. In Dead Fish Tell No Tales (Apple, Spotify), they take on a duo dominating the competitive fishing circuit. Are they the luckiest fishermen on Lake Erie?
Finally, there’s Crime Stings, featuring shadowy thieves, suspicious rivals and unsuspecting fall guys - all the hallmarks of a classic heist. But what was the target attracting thieves… and reporter Sam Mullins? Bees! (Apple, Spotify)
Working with all these disparate talents and stories offered the opportunity to veer all over the world geographically and cover a range of genres, but it also presented the challenge of making it all feel cohesive.
For that we relied on producer Layne Rose, excellent sound design from Shani Aviram and Hannis Brown, and the skillful MC work of the legendary Steve Buscemi. Thanks for listening!
